How to Install Wood Flooring Under Door Jambs

Installing wood flooring can be a challenging task, especially when it comes to fitting the flooring under door jambs. With proper preparation and the right techniques, you can achieve a seamless and professional-looking finish.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • Circular saw or jigsaw
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or chalk
  • Pry bar
  • Hammer or nail gun
  • 1/4-inch spacers
  • Wood filler

Step 1: Measure and Mark the Jamb

Measure the distance from the bottom of the door jamb to the top of the subfloor. Transfer this measurement to the jamb using a pencil or chalk line.

Step 2: Cut the Jamb

Using a circular saw or jigsaw, carefully cut along the marked line on the jamb. Make sure the cut is clean and precise.

Step 3: Remove the Jamb

Insert a pry bar under the jamb and carefully pry it away from the wall or frame. Remove any nails or screws holding the jamb in place.

Step 4: Install Spacers

Place 1/4-inch spacers along the bottom of the jamb cut. These spacers will create a gap between the flooring and the jamb, allowing for expansion and contraction.

Step 5: Slide in the Flooring

Slide the flooring plank under the jamb, making sure it fits snugly against the spacers. Tap the plank into place using a hammer or nail gun.

Step 6: Reinstall the Jamb

Once the flooring is in place, reinstall the door jamb by simply sliding it back into place. Use nails or screws to secure it to the wall or frame.

Step 7: Fill Gaps

Use wood filler to fill in any gaps between the flooring and the jamb. Allow the wood filler to dry completely before sanding it flush with the surface.

Tips for Success:

  • Use sharp blades for cutting, as dull blades can cause splintering and damage to the jamb.
  • Be careful when removing the jamb, as excessive force can damage the wall or frame.
  • Double-check your measurements before cutting the jamb to avoid any mistakes.
  • Sand the entire area around the jamb before applying wood filler to ensure a smooth transition.

By following these steps carefully, you can ensure that your wood flooring installation under door jambs is done professionally and looks flawless.
